Seiryo-ji Temple is the temple known as “Saga-no-mido” built by Hikaru Genji, the hero of “The Tale of Genji” in the Heian period (794-1185).
It was built as a villa of the Fujiwara clan during the Heian period and later became a temple.
The temple exudes charm as a place where visitors to the world of the Tale of Genji can experience the historical background and beauty of the story’s setting.
Known as Shakado to the local people, the temple derives its name from the fact that the main statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, a national treasure, has been worshipped by many people since ancient times.
