The following is a compilation of frequently asked questions and their answers.

Where can I purchase tickets?

For advanced tickets, make your purchase via the JR West “e5489” online reservation service, at major Japanese travel agencies, from at a Midori-no-Madoguchi counter or Midori-no-Kenbaiki PLUS ticket machine at the following JR West stations: Kyoto Station, Kameoka Station, Nijo Station, Saga-Arashiyama Station, Inari Station, Shin-Osaka Station, Osaka Station, Tsuruhashi Station, Kyobashi Station, Shin-Imamiya Station, JR Namba Station, Tennoji Station, Nara Station, Kansai-airport Station, and Sannomiya Station. Tickets go on sale starting at 10 a.m. on the day one month prior to the ride date.

Online Ticket Reservations/Purchasing

Submit reservations or purchase tickets through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION, JR-West’s online reservation service, beginning at 10 a.m. on the day 1 month prior to the ride date and up to 30 minutes before departure.

Day-of tickets can be purchased at the ticket offices at any Sagano Romantic Train station.

Individual basic fare tickets are available one month prior to the ride date. But when exactly is that?

Just as with JR seat tickets, basic fare tickets for individual customers are available beginning at 10 a.m. on the day one month prior (same date of previous month) to the ride date at major Japanese travel agencies, or from Midori-no-Madoguchi counters or Midori-no-Kenbaiki PLUS ticket machines at the following JR West stations: Kyoto Station, Kameoka Station, Nijo Station, Saga-Arashiyama Station, Inari Station, Shin-Osaka Station, Osaka Station, Tsuruhashi Station, Kyobashi Station, Shin-Imamiya Station, JR Namba Station, Tennoji Station, Nara Station, Kansai-airport Station, and Sannomiya Station. Reservations will also be accepted through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION, JR West’s online reservation service, beginning at 10 a.m. on the day one month prior to the ride date.

For dates with no corresponding date in the previous month, tickets will be available as follows.

Can I reserve and purchase tickets for “The Rich” car (car No. 5)?

For dates after March 1, 2020, you can reserve and purchase tickets at major Japanese travel agencies, via the JR West “e5489” online reservation service, or from Midori-no-Madoguchi counters or Midori-no-Kenbaiki PLUS ticket machines at the following JR West stations: Kyoto Station, Kameoka Station, Nijo Station, Saga-Arashiyama Station, Inari Station, Shin-Osaka Station, Osaka Station, Tsuruhashi Station, Kyobashi Station, Shin-Imamiya Station, JR Namba Station, Tennoji Station, Nara Station, Kansai-airport Station, and Sannomiya Station. At the station or travel agency, tell the staff member that you would like to ride on the “Sagano Rich Car.” Select “Sagano Rich Car” when making a reservation via the online reservation service (if no seats are available, an “×” will appear on the train selection screen). “The Rich” car (car No. 5) has no windows. Before purchasing, please note that you may get wet during rainy weather.

How early can I purchase a day-of ticket?

Day-of tickets are available at the following ticket offices beginning at the listed time.
Saga Torokko Station    approx. 8:35 a.m.
Arashiyama Torokko Station   approx. 8:50 a.m.
Kameoka Torokko Station   approx. 9:10 a.m.
The day's tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and ticket sales might begin a little earlier than normal if customers are lined up. Please understand that depending on the day's availability, we may not be able to meet all customer requests.

When is the Sagano Romantic train ticket offices open?

Saga Torokko Station    approx.8:35 - final train
Arashiyama Torokko Station   approx. 8:50 - final train
Kameoka Torokko Station   approx. 9:10 - final train
(Ticket offices might open a little earlier than normal if customers are lined up.)

Can tickets be purchased when reserving online?

Reserving and purchasing tickets became possible on May 21, 2019, through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION, JR-West’s new online reservation service, beginning at 10 a.m. on the day 1 month prior to the ride date and up to 30 minutes before departure.

When making a reservation/purchasing tickets online, can I specify the desired car and seat number?

Specification of the car and seat number (such as “Car No. 3, Seat No. 7A-D”) is not possible when reserving/purchasing tickets online.

When reserving/purchasing individual tickets, the seat position selection screen will offer a choice of “Window” or “Aisle” only. (Specification of the car is not possible.)

When reserving/purchasing tickets for two or more passengers, the seat position selection screen will offer a choice of “Grouped seating” or “Separate seating acceptable” only. (Specification of the car is not possible.)

 

Seats are organized into 4-person box sets (A, B, C, and D). Seats A and D are window seats.

For trains bound for Kameoka (“Downward” trains), seats C and D face the direction of travel. For trains bound for Saga (“Upward" trains), seats A and B face the direction of travel.

 

To specify the car and seat number (such as “Car No. 3, Seat No. 7, A–D”), tickets must be purchased from a Japanese travel agency offering JR tickets, or from a Midori-no-Madoguchi counter or Midori-no-Kenbaiki PLUS ticket machine at the following JR West stations: Kyoto Station, Kameoka Station, Nijo Station, Saga-Arashiyama Station, Inari Station, Shin-Osaka Station, Osaka Station, Tsuruhashi Station, Kyobashi Station, Shin-Imamiya Station, JR Namba Station, Tennoji Station, Nara Station, Kansai-airport Station, and Sannomiya Station. (Please note that tickets for some cars cannot be purchased in advance.)

Is there a domestic phone number I can call?

Inquiries can be made at 075-861-7444, but only Japanese automated assistance is available. For inquiries in English, please use the contact form here to ask a question via e-mail.

The website shows that seats are still available. Why can't I purchase any?

Since information is not updated in real time, please understand that sometimes the tickets you wish to purchase may be sold out or otherwise unavailable.

I want to reserve a seat in a specific car.

Seats are limited based on availability.

Are numbered tickets distributed in order to manage ticket sales?

We do not distribute numbered tickets. Tickets will be sold to customers in line, in order. If a large number of customers are in line, it is possible that not all requests will be met.

Under what conditions are fares required for toddlers (1 to 5 years old)?

No fare is required for a toddler traveling with an adult (12 years old or older) or a child (6 to 11 years old). Child fares are required for the second and subsequent toddlers traveling with a single adult or child. However, babies (under 1 year old) and toddlers requiring their own seat will need a Child ticket.

Can I return or exchange a ticket?

If the train that your ticket is valid for has not yet departed, you can refund or exchange your ticket one time at the location it was purchased or at any Torokko station with the exception of Hozukyo Station. For returns, a service fee of ¥220 per ticket will be charged. Please click here for more information.

Do you accept electronic payments or credit cards?

When purchasing a Sagano Romantic Train tickets at Torokko-Saga Sta, Torokko-Arashiyama Sta, or Torokko-Kameoka Stat, cash, credit card (VISA, MASTER, JCB, Diners, American Express, Discover Card), and transportation IC card (ICOCA , Suica, etc.) can be used. However, PiTaPa is not available.
Additionally, debit cards, JR PASS, and Seishun 18 tickets cannot be used.

Are there different types of tickets?

All Sagano Romantic Train tickets are reserved seating. After all reserved seats are sold, standing tickets will be made available (a limited number of tickets per car). After standing tickets are sold, the train will be listed as sold out.

What kind of car is “The Rich” car?

The Sagano Romantic Train is comprised of five cars. One of those (No. 5) is called “The Rich.” It is an open-air car with no windows, allowing passengers to take in more of the surrounding nature. As such, you may get wet during rainy weather. Please note that using umbrellas on the train during rainy weather is forbidden.

I reserved and purchased a ticket for “The Rich” car. What will happen if it rains?

“The Rich” car (car No. 5) has no windows. You may get wet in rainy weather. While you are permitted to ride during rainy weather (excluding extremely bad weather), umbrellas are prohibited, so please wear a raincoat. A processing fee will be charged for all refunds except in the case of extremely bad weather. Should a seat be available, you may make a single change to a seat on one of the other cars.

Can pets board the train?

Small dogs, cats, and other such pets may board under the following conditions:
The pet fits comfortably and completely inside a carrier that is no more than 70cm long and whose length, width, and height total no more than 90cm; and that weighs no more than 10kg when the pet is inside. The pet's entire body, including its head/face, must not protrude from the carrier.
* A separate ¥260 fee for small baggage will be added.
* Carts designed for pets are not allowed on board as they will exceed the above dimensions.

Can I bring a stroller on the train?

Strollers can be brought on the train if they are folded first.

Can I bring a bike on the train?

No bicycles - including disassembled bicycles in specialized bags and folding bicycles placed in bags - are allowed on board.

How long does it take to walk from Saga Torokko Station to Arashiyama Torokko Station?

It takes approximately 20 minutes, and may vary slightly depending on crowds.

Local Sights
When is the best time to see the cherry blossoms, or the fall leaves, along the route?

Cherry blossoms are best viewed from late March to early April, and fall leaves from mid-November to early December. These dates may vary depending on the weather.

How long does it take to walk to the bamboo forest?

It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Saga torokko station to the bamboo forest. If you continue to Arashiyama torokko station, it takes approximately 20 minutes.

What's the closest station to the bamboo forest?

Arashiyama Torokko Station is the closest station to the bamboo forest.
Leave the station and head left to reach the path to the forest.

I'd like to ride the Hozugawa River Boat. Is there a special discount?

Though there is no discount, you can visit the Hozugawa River Boat Ride corner inside Saga Torokko Station to make same-day boat reservations. You can also book a bus, taxi, or Kyobasha carriage to take you to the boarding site. Fares and other information are available from the Hozugawa Yusen Sightseeing Boat Association.

Are there any family-friendly hiking trails nearby?

The path from Arashiyama - Rokuchotoge - Ochiai - Kiyotaki - Takao is recognized as part of the Kyoto Trail and a Tokaido Nature Trail.

Station Facilities & Services
I'm traveling to Saga Torokko Station by car. Is there a parking lot?

There is no parking at Saga Torokko Station; please use public transport. Parking is available at Kameoka Torokko Station; click here for more information.

Is there a nursing room?

A nursing room is located inside the 19th Century Hall at Saga Torokko Station. Diaper-changing sheets are available in the men's and women's toilets at Saga Torokko Station, and in the accessible toilets at Arashiyama and Kameoka Torokko Stations.

When is Diorama Kyoto Japan open?

Hours: 9:00-17:30 (last entry at 17:00)

How much is the entrance fee to Diorama Kyoto Japan?

Entrance fees at Diorama Kyoto Japan are as follows:
